Exhibition Concept:
Memory is a fluid existence—both vague and intimate, both personal and collective. Continuously reshaped in the river of time, it forms the cornerstone of our identity and emotions. The contemporary art exhibition I Thought I Remembered takes memory as its central theme, inviting viewers to reexamine moments that have been forgotten, distorted, or redefined, and to explore how memory intertwines with daily life and art.
The exhibition brings together thirteen creators—five master’s students and eight undergraduates—who use diverse mediums such as painting and writing to capture elusive fragments of memory. From faded old photographs to the cicadas’ hum on a summer afternoon, from a spoken phrase to a fleeting scent, these seemingly ordinary moments are reinterpreted through art, becoming vessels for emotion and thought.
The curatorial intent of I Thought I Remembered is to view memory as a dynamic act of creation. Memory is not merely a recollection but a process that interacts with present emotions and experiences. Through artistic practice, the creators transform fragments of memory into visual and spatial language, constructing a perceptual field that feels both familiar and unfamiliar. This exhibition is not only a reflection on the past but also a questioning and dialogue with memory—how do we remember? And how do we rediscover ourselves through forgetting?
The exhibition hopes to resonate with viewers, encouraging them to engage in a dialogue with their own memories during the viewing process. In the flow of time, forgotten or reshaped feelings will resurface, offering an opportunity to reunderstand ourselves and the world.
